Why Philippines support hours map to UK 9 to 5 better than you think

The seven-hour gap that founders worry about is a feature, not a bug. A close look at how PH-based Customer Support actually covers a UK workday.

The single most common objection we hear from UK founders considering Philippines-based Customer Support is, predictably, about hours. "We need cover during our working day, won't they all be asleep?" The maths sounds bad: London is GMT, Manila is GMT+8, that's a seven or eight-hour gap. In practice the maths is the easy part.

    The actual numbers

UK working hours are typically 09:00 to 17:30. In Manila, that translates to 17:00 to 01:30 the following morning. A Filipino support agent on a UK-aligned shift starts their day in the late afternoon and finishes in the small hours. This pattern is well established in the Philippines, where a large share of the BPO industry has run on North American and European shifts for over twenty years.

The candidates we place have, in most cases, been working evening or overnight shifts for years. The shift pattern is the norm, not the exception.

    Three coverage patterns that work

    • Full UK overlap: one agent on a 17:00–01:30 PH shift covers the entire UK workday. This is the standard.
    • Split-day: two agents, one on a morning UK shift (PH evening), one on a late UK shift (PH late night). Covers 8am–10pm UK.
    • Around-the-clock from one country: three rotating agents on PH overnight, morning and afternoon shifts cover UK + US East Coast + early Australian hours. Common when the business has international customers.

What you actually have to manage

The hard part is not the timezone. It is the handover. If your UK team finishes at 17:30 and your PH agent arrives at 17:00 PH (09:00 UK), you have a half-hour of overlap for handover that you have to use. A daily 15-minute standup in a shared Loom or Slack thread will solve nine out of ten coordination issues. Without it, customers ping-pong between agents who do not know what the previous one said.

Pay, holidays, and the small print

Filipino public holidays do not map to UK ones. There are around 18 public holidays a year in the Philippines, including movable feasts (Holy Week, EDSA Revolution anniversary). If you are planning full coverage, you will need to either accept those gaps or staff a second agent. We document this in every Adarna brief so it is not a surprise on day one.

Pay, on the late shift, carries a premium. Standard practice is a 10% night differential for shifts that extend past midnight Manila time. Build that into the budget, not into the negotiation.
